I wake up, once again, to the smell of bacon and coffee.

I could get used to this.

The thought is enough to wake me fully, just enough to sit up in bed and realize Caleb’s not next to me. There’s a sudden ache in my chest at the absence of him, even though logically, I know he’s just down the hallway in the kitchen.

During the night, I eventually stopped snuggling him and moved to my own side of the bed, but his presence was still so calming. Just knowing he was there next to me seemed to be enough to keep me from panicking.

Seeing him as quickly as possible is probably the best way to stop the ache in my chest, so I pad my way down the hall and walk into his expansive, modern kitchen. I don’t even think to look at myself in the mirror first, which might have been a mistake. I’m sure I look awful.

Caleb turns toward me, and a smile quickly spreads across his whole face. “There she is,” he says, walking toward me.

He envelopes me in a hug, just like he has so many times before, but this time, I let my head fall against his chest and allow myself to just be held by him for a moment. “How did you sleep?”

“Perfectly,” I say. “But I’m still waiting for that good morning kiss you promised.”

He brings his lips down to mine, and I lift my head to meet him. Our lips press together, and it’s warm and calm and good. So good I feel myself smiling against his lips.

“Glad to see you haven’t started your inevitable freak out yet,” he says, stepping away and walking toward the coffee maker. “But I know it’s coming, and I want to talk about it. Sit.”

He motions toward a stool near the island before turning to rummage through his cabinets.

A moment later, I’m sitting on the stool, and Caleb’s placing a cup of coffee in front of me.

“I know you better than anyone, Hyacinth,” he says. “So, I know you’re going to panic. But I need you to know that I’m not going anywhere. No matter what you choose after that freakout, I’ll still be here. Whether it’s as a friend or something more, I’ve got you. I always will.”

“So you want something more?”

“I think I do,” he says. After taking a sip of his own coffee, he continues, “And I hope you’re willing to at least try it out with me. We can test the waters, see if this is something we want to do for real.”

“I don’t hate the idea of testing the waters,” I say. It’s like he knows exactly what I need to feel comfortable with this.

“How about this: we go on a few dates. Real dates. If, after we give it a real try, we decide we don’t want to move forward, we go back to being friends.”

“Do you really think we can do that? After what happened last night?” I ask.

“Well, I’m
